Expropriation

What is expropriation?

Expropriation is the taking of land without the consent of the owner by an expropriating authority in the exercise of its statutory powers. Land is usually expropriated as part of a larger development plan, such as the widening of highways, or the building of new roads. An expropriating authority means the Crown or any person empowered by statute to expropriate land. Expropriations are usually granted by the appropriate approval authorities. When land is expropriated, the expropriating authority is obliged to pay compensation to the landowner.
